What can most rescuers do to rescue people in swift water?
Since water rescue counts as one of the primary categories of technical rescue, we will discuss options for rescuers at the awareness level. Operating at a technical level requires a combination of trained personnel, available equipment, and regular practice. While we all may think technical rescue sounds cool, a majority of saves can be made with simple techniques. We will cover water rescue in 5 blog articles:
Swift water refers to moving water, in other words rivers, canals, and streams. Of parts of water rescue not discussed in this blog series include; open water (surf), ice rescue, dive rescue, and boat operations. As with any rescue operation water rescue is about sizing up the scene, identifying hazards for scene safety, and creating a simple plan from practiced skills to rescue victims. These articles are intended to be a quick reference to help rescuers remember key parts of water rescue, not as a replacement for actual training.
